Amid escalating atrocities in Gaza and rising international outrage, American pop singer Olivia Rodrigo has broken her silence, describing Israel’s assault on the Palestinian enclave as “horrific and completely unacceptable.”
Her statement comes as Palestinian casualties in Gaza soar over 58,000, with most of them women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Nearly nine months of Israeli bombardment, siege, and ground invasion have reduced Gaza to rubble, decimating its healthcare system and cutting off essential aid. The UN and multiple humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned of looming famine and widespread war crimes.
Olivia Rodrigo: ‘To give up on them is to give up on our shared humanity’

In an emotional Instagram story over the weekend, Rodrigo, the famous young American singer-songwriter and actress, spoke of her deep heartbreak at the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
“There are no words to describe the heartbreak I feel witnessing the devastation that is being inflicted upon innocent people in Palestine,” she wrote. “Mothers, fathers, and children in Gaza are starving, dehydrated, and being denied access to basic medical care and humanitarian aid.”
She added: “There is no child in Israel, Palestine, or anywhere in the world who deserves to suffer through what we’re seeing these children have to endure… To give up on them is to give up on our shared humanity.”
Rodrigo also revealed she has donated to UNICEF to support relief efforts and encouraged her millions of followers to do the same “if you have the means.”
From Billie Eilish to Dua Lipa: A cultural shift in solidarity

Rodrigo joins a growing list of global artists who have publicly denounced Israel’s actions in Gaza, many in defiance of the entertainment industry’s historical reluctance to wade into Palestine advocacy.
Earlier this month, Billie Eilish, also an American singer-songwriter and musician, criticized Israel’s proposal to forcibly relocate Palestinians to a so-called “humanitarian city” built atop the ruins of Rafah, calling it “horrifying.”
Lana Del Rey, a third American singer-songwriter, meanwhile, said she prays for Palestine “every day” and shared multiple posts highlighting the destruction in Gaza.
In May, an English and Albanian singer, songwriter, and actress, Dua Lipa, joined over 300 British celebrities in signing an open letter urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer to halt UK arms sales to Israel. “End the UK’s complicity in the horrors in Gaza,” the signatories demanded.
Prominent Hollywood voices have also weighed in. Ahead of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, more than 350 figures from the global film industry, including Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon, issued a statement condemning what they described as a genocide.
Silence broke amid global calls for a ceasefire.

As the humanitarian catastrophe deepens, pressure is mounting on Western governments and public figures to take a stand. Social media has played a significant role in shifting public discourse, with younger audiences urging celebrities to use their platforms to speak up.
Rodrigo’s statement is seen by many as a turning point in celebrity activism on Palestine, a topic once seen as too controversial for mainstream U.S. artists to address. ST
