Gaza Aid Remains ‘Drop in the Ocean’ as Israeli Forces Fire on Starving Civilians

UN warns that Israel’s easing of aid restrictions is inadequate as hunger deaths surge. Palestinian civilians were gunned down while waiting for food as a diplomatic push for peace resumes in New York.

SPECIAL REPORT:

The humanitarian nightmare in Gaza took a darker turn Monday as Israeli forces opened fire on crowds of Palestinian civilians waiting for food, killing at least one person and wounding several others. The shooting occurred at two separate food distribution points, highlighting the brutality of a war strategy that has weaponized hunger against an already besieged population.

The violence came just hours after the United Nations’ top humanitarian official stated that Israel’s decision to allow a modest increase in aid into Gaza is “welcome.” Still, it remains a “drop in the ocean” given the scale of need. Severe Israeli restrictions continue to choke life-saving humanitarian access to the 2.1 million people trapped in Gaza.

Hunger Deaths Soar, Including Infants

Gaza’s Ministry of Health confirmed that 14 more Palestinians, including a baby, died of malnutrition-related causes in the past 24 hours, bringing the official starvation death toll to at least 147. Aid agencies warn the real number could be much higher, as widespread hunger, disease, and trauma continue to grip the enclave.

“We are witnessing a collapse of humanity,” said a local medic in southern Gaza. “Babies are dying in their mothers’ arms because there is no food, no medicine, and no safe place.”

Global Calls for Ceasefire, as France and Saudi Arabia Host Talks

Amid growing global outrage, France and Saudi Arabia are co-hosting a conference in New York to revive diplomatic efforts toward a two-state solution, which has long been stalled but is now seen as more urgent than ever. However, observers remain skeptical, as Israel’s right-wing government continues to pursue a military-first strategy and rejects any compromise involving Hamas or a sovereign Palestinian state.

Hamas rejects the two-state solution as defined by international diplomacy. While it has shown some tactical flexibility for a long-term ceasefire or interim arrangements, its ideological stance remains committed to the liberation of all Palestinian land and the dismantling of the Israeli state.

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli military operations have killed at least 59,733 Palestinians and wounded over 144,000, according to Gaza health officials. In comparison, 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks, with than 200 taken captive.

Background: Aid ‘Pause’ Fails to Deliver Relief

On Sunday, Israel announced a limited “tactical pause” in military activity in parts of Gaza to allow humanitarian aid to pass through. The pause was scheduled from 10 am to 8 pm in selected areas, with aid corridors open from 6 am to 11 pm. However, shortly after the pause began, Israeli airstrikes resumed, including one that reportedly targeted a bakery in Gaza City.

The United Nations confirmed that only 100 trucks of aid were allowed into Gaza, a fraction of the daily minimum required. Aid organizations say more than 1,000 people have died while trying to obtain food since May.

Meanwhile, Israel, Jordan, and the UAE resumed controversial airdrops of food over the weekend, criticized by humanitarian groups as inefficient, expensive, and sometimes deadly.

As famine deepens and violence shows no sign of abating, global pressure on Israel continues to mount. But for Palestinians in Gaza, hope is running out faster than food, water, and life itself.
