SPECIAL REPORT
June 23, 2025
As tensions escalate following US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, fears of Iranian retaliation are mounting. With Washington’s extensive military presence spread across the Middle East, several key US bases could become flashpoints in a broader conflict.
Analysts warn that any escalation could put US military installations across the region directly in Tehran’s crosshairs. Here are the most significant US bases that may play a pivotal role, or face potential threats, as the crisis deepens.
Bahrain – Naval Command Post
Bahrain hosts the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, which oversees operations in the Gulf, Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and parts of the Indian Ocean. The small Gulf kingdom has long served as a maritime anchor for American forces in the region.

Qatar – Central Command Forward HQ
Al Udeid Air Base, located outside Doha, is the largest US military installation in the Middle East. Spanning 24 hectares, it serves as the forward headquarters of US Central Command (CENTCOM), directing operations from North Africa to Central Asia. Around 10,000 US troops are currently stationed there.
Kuwait – Logistics and Deployment Hub
Kuwait is home to several US military installations, including Camp Arifjan and Camp Buehring. The latter played a key role in the 2003 Iraq invasion and continues to support operations in Iraq and Syria. Ali Al Salem Air Base, near the Iraqi border, remains a critical hub for US airlift and logistics missions.
United Arab Emirates – Strategic Air Power

Al Dhafra Air Base, south of Abu Dhabi, is a vital asset for the US Air Force. Shared with UAE forces, it supports reconnaissance and strike missions across the region, including operations against Daesh. Additionally, Jebel Ali Port in Dubai serves as the largest US Navy docking facility outside the United States.
Iraq – A Legacy of War
The US presence in Iraq includes Ain Al Asad Air Base in Anbar province and Erbil Air Base in the Kurdistan Region. Ain Al Asad was notably targeted by Iranian missiles in 2020 in response to the killing of General Qasem Soleimani. Both bases are currently used for counterterrorism operations and coalition training programs.
Saudi Arabia – Missile Defence and Air Operations

At Prince Sultan Air Base, southeast of Riyadh, US forces maintain advanced air defence systems including Patriot and THAAD batteries. According to a 2024 White House report, more than 2,300 US military personnel are deployed in Saudi Arabia, primarily for missile defence and logistics support.
Jordan – Operations Across the Levant
Muwaffaq al Salti Air Base, near Azraq in eastern Jordan, hosts the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing. US operations from this base focus on missions in Syria, Iraq, and broader Levantine regions, making it a crucial launchpad for regional engagement.
CONCLUSION:
With tensions surging and the Middle East once again at the epicenter of global geopolitical friction, the expansive US military footprint represents both a strategic deterrent and a potential liability, especially if hostilities with Iran intensify. (ST)
