Trump Vows More Weapons for Ukraine After Brief Aid Pause

Staff Report

Washington, D.C. – July 8, 2025 — U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to send more “defensive weapons” to Ukraine, reversing a brief suspension of aid that sparked alarm in Kyiv and raised questions about Washington’s long-term commitment to Ukraine’s defense.

“They’re Getting Hit Very Hard”: Trump Reverses Course

Speaking at the White House ahead of a dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump told reporters: “We’re going to send some more weapons. We have to – they have to be able to defend themselves… They’re getting hit very, very hard.”

The announcement comes just a week after Trump’s administration halted the shipment of air defense systems, including Patriot missiles, citing a review of U.S. military stockpiles and spending abroad.

‘America First’ or Waning Support?

White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly defended the pause last week, saying it was made “to put America’s interests first.” Pentagon officials also hinted at a strategic shift, prioritizing potential future conflict in the Pacific over continuing high-scale support for Ukraine.

Defense policy chief Elbridge Colby stated: “We are adapting our approach to support Ukraine while ensuring U.S. force readiness.”

Phone Calls with Putin & Zelensky

Trump’s renewed pledge follows a series of high-stakes calls with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Trump admitted his talk with Putin was “disappointing” and yielded “no progress” on a ceasefire. By contrast, he described his conversation with Zelensky as “very good.” Zelensky later said it was the “most productive” conversation he’s had with the U.S. president.

Russia Steps Up Aerial Attacks

Russia has dramatically escalated drone and missile strikes across Ukraine. On July 4, Kyiv experienced what officials say was the largest single aerial attack of the war.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that 550 drones and missiles were launched overnight in a coordinated assault, killing at least a dozen civilians and wounding scores more.

Ukrainian officials say the fresh batch of U.S. weapons could help restore depleted defenses in cities like Kyiv and Dnipro.

What the New Weapons Mean for Ukraine

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed the U.S. would resume shipments of “defensive weapons” under President Trump’s direction. These include: Patriot air defense systems, Anti-armor missiles, Artillery shells, Radar, and drone systems. Parnell added: “This aid ensures Ukraine can defend itself while we work to secure a lasting peace.”

US Stockpile Concerns & Political Pressure

With U.S. stockpiles under strain and political divisions deepening in Washington, Trump’s balancing act between isolationist rhetoric and global military commitments remains under scrutiny. Analysts say the move is aimed at reassuring allies while maintaining Trump’s “America First” posture domestically.

Context: A War Entering Its Fourth Year

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the U.S. has remained Ukraine’s largest military supporter. However, delays in aid, changing priorities, and Trump’s unpredictable diplomacy have raised concerns in European capitals about future Western resolve.

As Ukraine braces for further Russian offensives, the latest weapons commitment may offer short-term relief, but long-term uncertainties remain. (ST)
