Trump Hosts Netanyahu at White House as Gaza Conflict Sees Rare Blow to Israeli Forces

Staff Report

As U.S. President Donald Trump hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for high-level talks at the White House, one of the deadliest recent attacks on Israeli troops unfolded in northern Gaza, marking what Israeli media called a “difficult and extraordinary” development in the nearly ten-month-long war.

During their meeting on Monday, Trump expressed optimism about a possible ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, claiming the talks were “going along very well.” He added, “They [Hamas] want to meet and they want to have that ceasefire.”

Despite the hopeful tone, the meeting occurred just hours after a deadly ambush killed five Israeli soldiers in Gaza, one of the bloodiest days for Israeli forces in recent months.

Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s continued military objectives in Gaza but said Israel and the U.S. were working together to find countries “willing to give Palestinians a better future.” The Israeli leader also presented Trump with a letter nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize, calling him a “forger of peace… in one region after the other.”

Rare and Lethal Attack on Israeli Forces in Beit Hanoun

On the ground, Israeli forces suffered a significant setback late Monday when at least five soldiers were killed and 14 others wounded in what Israeli media described as an “unusual and challenging” ambush by Palestinian resistance fighters in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza.

According to preliminary findings from the Israeli military, the attack began with an explosive device targeting an Israeli tank. A second and third blast hit rescue teams responding to the initial explosion. A fourth device, followed by light arms fire, struck wounded soldiers on the ground.

The IDF confirmed the deaths of two soldiers from Jerusalem: The names of the other three soldiers are expected to be released after family notification.

Extraordinary” Resistance Operation:

Palestinian factions hailed the operation as a successful blow to Israeli ground operations in the north, though no group immediately claimed responsibility. Israeli media emphasized that the soldiers were operating on foot and appeared to be caught off guard, despite the area being targeted by airstrikes earlier in the day. The attack, involving layered explosives and coordinated gunfire, is seen as one of the most sophisticated Palestinian operations in recent months.

Civilian Toll Rises as War Enters 10th Month

Since the war began in October 2023 following Hamas’ cross-border attack, Israeli operations have devastated large parts of the Gaza Strip. According to Palestinian health officials, more than 57,500 Palestinians, the majority women and children, have been killed.

Humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate, with Gaza facing severe shortages of food, water, and medical aid. Entire neighborhoods lie in ruins, and international organizations have repeatedly warned of looming famine and war crimes.

Netanyahu Rejects Full Palestinian Statehood

At the White House, Netanyahu dismissed the idea of full Palestinian sovereignty in Gaza: “Now, people will say it’s not a complete state, it’s not a state. We don’t care.” The Israeli prime minister also confirmed ongoing discussions with Washington about relocating Palestinians to third countries, saying, “If people want to stay, they can stay, but if they want to leave, they should be able to leave.”

The Palestinian Authority and human rights organizations have condemned such proposals as a violation of international law and a form of ethnic cleansing.

Trump Eyes Iran Talks, Balances War and Diplomacy

In a surprising comment, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff said Washington may initiate talks with Iran “very quickly, in the next week or so.” The statement comes amid heightened tensions in the region, where Iran’s proxies, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and various armed factions in Iraq and Syria, have escalated their rhetoric and activity.

Trump, balancing war strategy and peacebuilding, maintained that Hamas was ready for peace, while reaffirming his support for Israel’s security goals.

Context: Ceasefire Hopes vs Battlefield Realities

While Trump’s remarks suggest movement on the diplomatic front, the deadly ambush in Gaza underlines the conflict’s continued intensity. Israel’s military is still engaged in dense urban warfare in parts of Gaza, facing entrenched resistance. The Beit Hanoun attack may shift Israeli public opinion, already fatigued by months of war and rising casualties.

Meanwhile, Qatar-mediated ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas concluded last week without a breakthrough, but are expected to resume. (ST)
