Hamas says its iconic masked spokesman Abu Ubaida and several top Qassam Brigades leaders were martyred during Israel’s two-year war on Gaza, describing the losses as a heavy but resolute sacrifice
The Palestinian resistance group Hamas has confirmed the martyrdom of Abu Ubaida, its iconic wartime spokesman, along with several senior military commanders during Israel’s two-year war on Gaza.
In a recorded statement released on Monday, Hamas’ armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, said Abu Ubaida — whose real name was Hudhayfah Abdullah al-Kahlout — was martyred during the conflict.
Rarely seen in public and always masked, Abu Ubaida had served as Hamas’ most recognisable voice throughout the war, delivering frequent statements and battlefield updates that resonated globally.
The group also confirmed the death of its chief of staff, Mohammed Sinwar, who led the Qassam Brigades through what Hamas described as an “exceptionally difficult period” after succeeding longtime commander Mohammed Deif. Sinwar was the brother of Yahya Sinwar, Hamas’ political chief in Gaza.
Several other commanders were also confirmed martyred. Among them was Mohammed Shabana, commander of the Rafah Brigade, whom Hamas said died alongside Yahya Sinwar.
Hamas further announced the death of Hakam al-Issa, a senior figure involved in military training, education and strategic planning, as well as Raed Saad, identified as the head of the group’s weapons manufacturing division and a former chief of operations.
Describing the losses as a reflection of the heavy price paid by its leadership, Hamas said the deaths would not weaken the resistance.
