Performer Unfurls Palestinian Flag at Royal Opera House in Protest of Gaza Atrocities

In a rare act of political protest at one of the world’s most prestigious cultural venues, a cast member at London’s Royal Opera House (ROH) unfurled a large Palestinian flag during the final curtain call of Il trovatore on Saturday night, drawing global attention.

The Royal Opera House, located in Covent Garden, is internationally renowned as a symbol of Britain’s artistic heritage and home to The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet. Its stage has long been associated with tradition, elegance, and political neutrality, often hosting performances attended by royalty and dignitaries. Against this backdrop, the silent protest resonated far beyond the walls of the theatre.

Footage from the performance shows the artist holding the Palestinian flag aloft while an official attempts to wrestle it away during the curtain call. The performer resists, holding firmly to the flag while continuing to face the applauding audience. Other cast members nearby appear startled by the incident, while officials in the wings can be seen shouting in protest, to no response from the artist.

The Royal Ballet and Opera later described the act as a “spontaneous and unauthorised action” that went against the institution’s commitment to political neutrality.

Witnesses claimed there were two attempts by backstage officials to take the flag, with only the second captured on video as more people turned on their cameras.

The performer’s identity has not been officially confirmed. Palestinian flags have become a symbol of solidarity at protests worldwide amid growing global outrage over the ongoing atrocities in Gaza by Israel. (VIDEO COURTESY BBC)
